Artist Bio and Statement
Born 1996. Masaka, Uganda
Frank Ssuuna is a self-taught artist whose practice centers on the decolonization of art. He uses local materials such as soil, barkcloth, and found objects to challenge and subvert colonial histories of cultural erasure and material exploitation. Soil, rich with local heritage and history, serves as a powerful form of resistance against the dominance of Western materials and aesthetics in contemporary art. He reclaims cultural identity and expresses resistance to the colonial legacies that have long sought to diminish indigenous knowledge and creativity.
ARTIST STATEMENT
At the heart of my work is an exploration of the profound connection between humanity and the earth. I emphasize that soil is not just a medium, but a vital force, essential to our survival and an embodiment of ethnic culture and civilization. My art advocates for environmental conservation and sustainability, highlighting the need to preserve the earth that sustains us for future generations.
My work also reflects on my personal experiences, relationships, and community, engaging with themes of identity, culture, and social dynamics. Through the use of green, I evoke life, nature, serenity, and vitality—symbols of our origins, childhood, and motherland. For me, art is an expression of belonging, nostalgia, and the rich tapestry of our lives, interwoven with beliefs, livelihood, religion, and health.
